The Room of Trophies
Often, the Viceroy of Ouidah would start to dance, having his robe and steps twirl and twist around the skulls of his hunting trophies. Yet, he has always behaved with the style of a great lord. The owners of fishing boats of every colour would always come from the Cape Green islands to eat at his table and drink the wine of his cellars. He gave Ouidah the aspect of a civil city and was nicknamed "The Elephant." Those who worked for him, worshipped him. When walking through the fields, they would always sing: "The elephant spreads its net on land and sea. He gives us pearls when we give him mosquitoes." The Viceroy of Ouidah is a small story of tropical madness and cruelty.
